CCR continues to use a DoD 3-pass wiping process for eligible hard drives. We use StarTech.com devices/equipment to complete the wiping passes.
The same wiping approach is used for eligible SSDs, NVMe drives, and flash drives.
When physical destruction is required, CCR disassembles the hard drive, removes/separates the circuit board, drills the drive, and then sends the resulting material to an R2-certified downstream recycling partner.
If a drive cannot be successfully wiped, CCR moves to physical destruction.
Customers are strongly encouraged to factory-reset phones and tablets and remove the devices from associated cloud accounts before turning them over to CCR.
This is the best practice when getting rid of phones, as modern phones use advanced encryption to permanently destroy the encryption key during a factory reset.
Certificates of Destruction are available for organizations that require documentation. Current fee: $8.00 per hard drive requiring a certificate.
Certificate documentation may include:
Businesses that prefer to retain their hard drives may request that reasonably accessible drives be removed at the customer’s location and handed back before CCR leaves the pickup site.
When physical destruction is required, resulting material is sent to an R2-certified downstream recycling partner.
Connect Computer Recycling is not R2 certified, but has R2 certified partners.
